The thesis consists of two parts: an article and a PhD-proposal. In the article, ambiguities in the concept of access consciousness are explored and a more precise formulation is offered. Some of its immediate consequences are also described. The PhD-proposal deals with enactivism, a framework that has been used to explain the existence of minds. I propose to investigate common traits in various enactivist theories in order to develop a domain-general enactivism.
