Rationalization is an attempt to change a pre-existing adhoc workflow into one based on a set of published rules. The history of workflow can be traced back to the works of Frederick Taylor and Henry Gantt, although the term was not in use during their lifetime. The two launched the study of the deliberate, rational orientation of work, primarily in the context of manufacturing. This gave rise to time and motion studies.
