Alois Riehl (pp. 156-167): PIERRE CHARLES.-Riehl, in his Geschichte der philosophische Kritizismus shows the insufficiency of the psychological and idealistic interpretations of Kant and insists that as a matter of fact the Kantian philosophy involves the absolute reality of the thing-in-itself. VERONNET. -Thermodynamics by no means renders useless the idea of atoms and molecules, but on the contrary gives it a wider application in the explanation of physical transformations. By means of thermodynamics, moreover, we may expect to become as well acquainted with liquid and crystalline molecules as at present in chemistry with gaseous molecules. MIill and Herbert Spencer, presented in the first portion of the article may be criticized as follows: (1) It vainly attempts to explain by means of the mental constitution of the observer the necessity and universality of natural laws; (2) the advocates of the doctrine can not cite a single actual case in which association is transformed into belief by virtue of mere repetition.
