Users can not wa ste time searc hing for do cu ments, loo king for the last ver sion, ma king sure that do cu ment is ac ces sib le; looking for ap pli ca tion for vie wing or edi ting the do cu ment, etc. Com pa nies need bet ter con trol over all un struc tu red con tent they pro du ce or re cei ve. This un struc tu red con tent ma kes up 80% of all in forma tion sour ces (Mar lin, 2005), impl ying that struc tu red data ac counts for only twenty per cent of en ter pri se in for ma tion con tent. Cur rent en ter pri se ap pli ca tions (e. g. En ter pri se Re sour ce Plan ning, Cu sto mer Re la tions hip Ma na ge ment, Supply Chan ge Ma na ge ment) use just the se twenty per cent of en ter pri se data, which are ma na ged wit hin cen tra li zed da ta bases. Com pa nies have a good op por tu nity to gain com pe ti ti ve ad van ta ge by ma na ging un struc tu red con tent, as ef fec ti ve ma na ge ment of un struc tu red in for ma tion exc han ge, do cu ment sha ring and who le cross-com pany col la bo ra tion are cri ti cal to bu si ness suc cess to day. En ter pri se Con tent Ma na ge ment system is de sig ned to ma na ge lar ge vo lu mes of un struc tu red in for ma tion and to make con tent wi dely avai lab le. This term was in tro du ced by the As so cia tion for In for ma tion and Ima ge Ma na ge ment (AIIM) and is de fi ned 1 as: "En ter pri se Con tent Ma na ge ment (ECM) is the stra te gies, met hods and tools used to cap tu re, ma na ge, sto re, pre ser ve, and de li ver con tent and do cu ments re la ted to or ga ni sa tio nal pro ces ses.
