According to the World Health Organization (WHO) the definition of palliative care is the active and total care of patients whose disease no longer responds to curative treatments. Faced with the progressive aging of the population, medical schools need to be prepared for new approaches and topics related to senility, since training courses are scarce and on the subject during graduation. Thus, palliative care, aimed at achieving the best possible quality of life for patients and their families, will have the opportunity to consolidate in Brazil and enable future doctors to better care for the elderly. The research aimed to evaluate the knowledge in palliative care (CP) of extension students of an institutionalized elderly project. This is a field research of descriptive analysis and qualitative approach conducted with extension students in a long-term institution. The study sample consisted of 10 students from different periods and both sexes. As a tool, a semistructured interview script containing personal data related to the knowledge of the palliative care approach was applied. The research was guided by the resolution 466/12 of the CNS which preserved all ethical aspects involving human beings. Devido ao desenvolvimento da tecnologia, maior investimento em estudos os quais procuram prezar pela longevidade, e a inserção de vacinas, o Brasil apresentou uma grande transição epidemiológica, resultando em uma queda nas taxas de mortalidade e natalidade. Enquanto que, antigamente, as pessoas morriam de doenças infecciosas, na atualidade, são mais comuns comorbidades resultantes de doenças crônicas-degenerativas, muitas vezes, influenciadas pela fragilidade adquirida no decorrer da vida (ARAÚJO, 2012).
