Protein Translocation in Photoreceptor Light Adaptation: A Common Theme in Vertebrate and Invertebrate Vision
2003
Science Signaling
One of the most fascinating features of our visual system is its ability to adjust the sensitivity of light-evoked responses over an enormously wide range of ambient lighting conditions. The illumination at the Earth's surface varies by nearly 11 orders of magnitude during the normal day-night cycle, and the visual system covers this entire range of light intensities with two neuronal subsystems that rely on the activity of two types of photoreceptor cells, rods and cones.
