Since L10 ordered Fe-Pt has very high uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, it is an attractive candidate for ultra-high-density storage using heat-assisted magnetic recording. But its Curie temperature of 500 ℃ needs to be lowered if a temperature rise above the Curie temperature is to be achieved by the use of moderate laser power. Control of the Curie temperature was investigated in Fe60-xNixPt40 thin films sputtered on quartz glass substrates. L10 phase (001) texture was found in all the films with

XRD rocking curves revealed that the (001) orientation is much improved as x increases, while the order parameter S is gradually degraded, and the magnetic anisotropy energy is decreased. A Curie temperature of around 300 ℃, which may be suitable for heat-assisted magnetic recording, is obtained for x = 20 to 24.
