This paper aims to reflect upon the strategies of marital choice and dating relationships within the poor, black and mixed population from Salvador, Bahia, thinking over how the hierarchies of status, class and race interfered in structuring of the matrimonial strategies of this population segment, since a "good marriage" could facilitate survival as well as to provide blacks and mixed people relatively safe channels of social mobility.
