Champia taironensis is described as a new Rhodophyta from the Colombia n Caribbean. The species belongs to group of plants with the flattened thallus, and had been earlier reported for Colombia as Champia compressa Harvey. La especie pertenece al grupo de las que presentan el talo aplanado y fue registrada para Colombia como Champia compressa Harvey. La nueva especie difiere de las otras de este mismo grupo, C. compressa, C. vieillardii Kützing, C. bifida Okamura, C. expansa Yendo y C. spathulata Weber-Van Bosse, en su hábito, modo de fijarse al sustrato, hápteras entre sus ramas, tipo de ramificación, confinamiento de los filamentos longitudinales en el diafragma, iridiscencia y en el tamaño de las células corticales internas y de sus tetrasporangios. Se provee información adicional sobre la distinción entre C. compressa y C. vieillardii; por más de un siglo, estas dos especies han sido difíciles de mantener como dos táxones diferentes.
