Because of conchological similarities a number of terrestrial snails collected in the south of the Iberian Peninsula has traditionally been identified as Ponentina subvirescens (Bellamy, 1839). The present paper, however, describes the genital anatomy of these specimens and shows that the species involved must be assigned to the genus Trichia Hartmann, 1840. After a scrutiny of the relevant literatura it is furthermore concluded that the epitheton specificum martigena (as in Helix martigena

According to literature data and field observations by the authors, it appears that true Ponentina subvirescens does not occur south of the Guadalquivir River, while for Trichia martigena this river represents the northernmost distributional limit.
