THE main object of the work now published was to ascertain the actual mechanism of the ready evolution of oxygen from a heated mixture of potassium chlorate and oxides of manganese, and to test the probability of the numerous chemical theories of this action which have been advanced from time to time. mechanical " hypothesis was dealt with in Part IV (Trans., 1901, 79, 939).
