The scattering properties regarding the rotational degrees of freedom of a molecular ion in the presence of a buffer gas of helium is investigated. This study is undertaken within the framework of the infinite order sudden (IOS) approximation for rotational transitions, which is shown to be applicable to a large variety of molecular ions in a buffer gas of helium at fairly low temperatures.
