Readmission to ICU is still associated with higher morbidity and mortality. We analyzed reasons and outcome of readmission and identified risk factors. Retrospective observational study with 353 patients readmitted to ICU between 01/2001 and 12/2009 after cardiac surgery. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify independent risk factors. Totally 9555 patients underwent cardiac surgery in this period. 3,6% (n=353) were readmitted. 30-day-mortality of readmitted was 13,1%. The main

CPR, severe neurological impairment and acute kidney failure were associated with highest mortality. Independent predictors for 30-day-mortality were age, postoperative renal replacement therapy, LCOS, sepsis and postoperative coma. Readmission to ICU after cardiac surgery still remains associated with high mortality. Adverse outcome might be improved by minimizing risk factors, early diagnosis and prompt treatment of modifiable risk factors.
