The rice bacterial blight pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) injects transcription activator-like effectors (TALEs) that bind and activate host susceptibility (S) genes important for disease. Clade III SWEET genes are major S genes for bacterial blight.
