Under submerged and non-submerged conditions, some ecological characteristics of African deepwater rice (Oryza glaberrima STEUD.) varieties and Asian deepwater rice (O. sativa L.) varieties were examined. Judging from the position of the lowest elongated internode (LEI) of the submerged plants, the floating ability of the African deepwater rice plants was intermediate between that of the Bangladesh and Thai or Vietnamese deepwater rice varieties in Asia. Under non-submerged and 8 to 13 hour

Photoperiodic response of the African deepwater rice varieties was similar to that of the Bangladesh deepwater rice varieties. The numbers of leaves and elongated internodes on the main culm were smaller in the African deepwater rice varieties than in the Asian ones. Based on these characteristics, the African deepwater rice varieties were similar to the Myanmar deepwater rice varieties. A negative correlation was observed between the LEI position and the number of elongated internodes in the Asian deepwater rice varieties unlike in the African deepwater rice varieties.
