Under submerged and non-submerged conditions, some ecological characteristics of African deepwater rice (Oryza glaberrima STEUD.) varieties and Asian deepwater rice (O. sativa L.) varieties were examined. Judging from the position of the lowest elongated internode (LEI) of the submerged plants, the floating ability of the African deepwater rice plants was intermediate between that of the Bangladesh and Thai or Vietnamese deepwater rice varieties in Asia.
