(p-CH3C6H4)4Bi2 is obtained from ditolylbismuth bromide with sodium in liquid ammonia. The compound reacts with selenium, sulfur or p-benzoquinone with increasing rate to the corresponding (R2Bi)2E-derivatives (E = S, Se, 1,4-C6H4O2). Reactions of the dibismuthane with equimolar amounts of diphenyl dichalcogenides produce phenylchalcogenobismuthanes of the general formula (p-CH3C6H4)2BiEC6H5 (E - S, Se, Te).
