more » ... ospital in an interior city of São Paulo State, Brazil. The subjects were men between the fourth and seventh decade of life 80% and showed that they possessed information about the developments of the surgical procedures in terms of absence of voice 60% and removal of the larynx 50%, as well as about changes in life after the surgical procedure, especially about the need to stop working and the absence of their voice 40%. As to doubts, 50% affirmed that they needed even more information about the voice 30% and breathing after the surgery 30%. It is concluded that these patients need more information for better coping with the postoperative situation. Descriptors: nursing; laringectomy; cancer.
