The β-cell of the pancreatic islets is constituted of a network of calcium signaling pathways strongly involved in insulin biosynthesis and insulin release. The pineal hormone melatonin influences the insulin secretion and the gene expression of components of the calcium/calmodulin-signaling pathwaysparticipating in the regulation of insulin secretion. more » ... hown. In pancreatic β-cells the phosphorylation level of the transcription factor cyclic AMP-response element-binding protein (CREB) is modulated by melatonin. The results of the present study contribute to a better understanding of a complex melatonin impact on β-cells including their signaling pathways. Perspectively, the results of the present study provide new approaches for the therapy of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
