The pathogenesis of scrapie, a transmissible subacute spongiform encephalopathy, is unclear. However, certain aspects of the known cellular and molecular neuropathology in scrapie led us to hypothesize that cytokines could mediate cerebral pathological changes in this neurodegenerative disease.
