Subject Searches Using Two Catalogs: A Comparative Evaluation

This paper reports the results of a study undertaken to determine if dividing a traditional dictionary catalog would result in an increase in the effective use of university library catalogs. Two catalogs-one in dictionary arrangement, the other divided into subject and non-subject entries_-were selected and the appropriate sections matched. Participants were chosen at random from the undergraduate population of the two universities. The results indicated that, for a series of questions
