After a brief illustration of the problem of plagiarism between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the essay aims to reconstruct and analyse, with a wide-ranging text sampling, the positions of two of the leading exponents of 'contra d'Annunzio' in that period: Enrico Thovez and Gian Pietro Lucini.
