Accurate measurement of island location is crucial for efficient suppression of the neoclassical tearing mode by electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD). In the control system on DIII-D the contour of the resonant q-surface is measured in real time based on real-time magnetohydrodynamic reconstructions, EFITs, that include motional Stark effect measurements of pitch angle in the analysis. A new method for determination of the radial position of the q-surface using a 40 channel electron

This method analyses localized temperature fluctuations caused by motion of the island and can be used by the plasma control system as a complementary measurement of the radial position of the q-surface contour for faster and more accurate alignment of the ECCD.
