The question first arose as part of a larger study, conducted for the World Bank/International Finance Corporation (Dodds & Joppe, 2005), however, this study provided a larger scope regarding access to tourism markets by lesser developed countries. Resumen I Existe abundante literatura sobre la necesidad de un turismo sostenible, pero existen relativamente pocos autores que hayan examinando su aplicación práctica y sus implicaciones en regiones específicas del mundo. Este estudio tiene como finalidad identificar y evaluar las prácticas de responsabilidad social corporativa en el sector turístico y los códigos de conducta, tanto los publicados por organizaciones internacionales o no-gubernamentales, como los incorporados por las pro-pias empresas. El estudio también intenta determinar la demanda de turismo sostenible. Al identificar la situa-ción actual de la sostenibilidad dentro de la industria del turismo, es posible determinar cuáles son las accio-nes necesarias para promover el programa, especial-mente en regiones tales como el Caribe. La cuestión surge por primera vez como parte de un estudio más extenso, realizado para el Banco Mundial/Corporación Financiera Internacional (Dodds & Joppe, 2005), sin embargo, este estudio tenía mayor alcance con respec-to al acceso a los mercados turísticos de los países menos desarrollados.
