ABSTRACT Drawing upon gender studies, this article seeks to dialogue with the experience of the Shelter Home Mãe da Mata (CAMM), in Rio Branco, capital of the state of Acre. CAMM provides support and protection to women in situation of domestic violence, following the guidelines and strategies for the implementation of shelter homes supplied by the Special Bureau for Women's Policies. In terms of the conducted research, the main finding is the proposal of incorporating the figure of the mentor in the paragraph that establishes the minimum requirements concerning the human resources employed in the shelter house. The mentor has the function of welcoming the women who resort to the shelter when the interdisciplinary and operational teams are not available. PALAVRAS CHAVE Gender. Violence against women.
