The IEEE 1451 standards family provides a set of common interfaces for connecting transducers to existing instrumentation and control networks. Currently IEEE 1451.5 is proposed to define the interface for wireless sensors to a system without a network connection. IEEE 1451.6 is also being defined for a network using a Controller Area Network (CAN). As the IEEE 1451.5 and 1451.6 support both wired and wireless sensor networks, sensor networks shall evolve as heterogeneous networks.
