Context: Ageing is associated with an increasing loss of muscle mass, strength and physical performance. The decline, known as sarcopenia, can lead to physical limitations, poor quality of life, and death. Proteins and strength training can counteract the development and progression of the disease. However, the effect of a combined intervention is unclear. Objective: The effectiveness of the combined intervention of milk proteins/amino acid supplements and strength training on muscle parameters

Data Sources: Until 8.9.2019 an extensive literature search was carried out in Pubmed to identify German or English-language studies that deal with the influence of the combined intervention on physical performance and/or muscle parameters in older people compared to a control group. Study Selection: Only studies that collected data on muscle mass and/or muscle strength and physical function and whose study population consisted of healthy or sarcopenic subjects from the age of 50 were included. Data Synthesis: The data from the 18 included studies were assessed using a qualitative analysis. Treatment of sarcopenia with combined nutritional and strength training intervention in two studies did not improve the majority of the outcomes. In healthy older people, less than 50 % of the studies showed a significant improvement in muscular outcomes and physical performance. Conclusions: Due to the different protocols for strength training and nutrient supply, the results are limited. Further studies with better comparability must be done in order to assess the effect.
