Brown planthopper (BPH) threatens rice production in the northern Java area. Resistance rice to BPH is the most preferred method to control this pest. However, brown planthopper could adapt to its host and break the resistant gene, to form a new biotype. Synchronized planting and appropriate planting time reduces population of brown planthoppers effectively on the early planting stage. Insecticide application if ever needed, is the last option to be applied for controlling the pest, which has to be applied rationally as recommended. Controlling brown planthoppers also requires the active role of farmers with the government support. ABSTRAK Hama wereng cokelat menjadi ancaman produksi padi di wilayah persawahan Pantai Utara (Pantura) Jawa. Varietas tahan dijadikan pilihan utama untuk menanggulangi serangan, namun demikian, varietas tahan mempunyai keterbatasan karena wereng cokelat dapat beradaptasi membentuk biotipe baru. Pengendalian Hama Terpadu (PHT) konvensional bersifat reaktif terhadap serangan hama, dan sering tetap mengandalkan insektisida. PHT biointensif bersifat tindakan proaktif dan merupakan konsep pengendalian berdasarkan pemahaman ekologi, termasuk tanam serempak, waktu semai/tanam berdasarkan hasil monitoring serangga hama menggunakan lampu perangkap, dan pengaturan pola rotasi tanam. Tanam serempak dan semai/tanam pada waktu yang tepat efektif mengurangi populasi hama di awal pertanaman. Aplikasi insektisida sebagai langkah terakhir dalam pengendalian wereng cokelat harus rasional dan sesuai anjuran berdasarkan hasil pengamatan intensif. Pengendalian wereng cokelat tidak dapat diselesaikan hanya menggunakan teknologi tetapi juga perlu peran aktif petani sebagai pengguna teknologi dan dengan dukungan pemerintah.
