Variational envelope function of an exciton in a single quantum well wire (SQWW) is described in the framework of the effective mass approximation for two-band model. The SQWW considered has thickness values : L, < ag, along the growth axis of the sample, and L, > 3aB for the lateral dimension (where ag is the Bohr radius). Exciton polarizations and optical response for SQWW and for a grating of QWWs are given.
