(1) claim to demonstrate decreases in the concentration of hypothalamic [-endorphin but not pituitary [-endorphin, hypothalamic adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), or pituitary ACTH in rat brain after a 3-day fast. From this they conclude that hypothalamic ,B-endorphin "may serve as a mechanism for the down-regulation of feeding behavior, enhancing energy conservation during periods of food storage."
