MAGNETIC AND MAGNETO-OPTIC PROPERTIES OF AMORPHOUS Co-Er FILMS

W~ have spu.tter deposited amorphous COl-x-Erx films with ~ 22 and studied their magnetic and magneto-opuc properues. The magnetization first decreases with increasing x reaching a compensation for x= 17 at 5 K. The Er .mo~ent was found to be 7.0 JIB indicating non-collinear spin structure. The field depen~en~ of magnetizatIon shows ~at for x=:= 15.8 and 17.9, at a critical field Her 1 the antiferromagnetic couplIng 1S broken. The results are discussed In terms of the known model. more » ... odel. The polar Kerr rotation at 633 nm wavelength shows a monotonous decrease with increasing x implying that the rotation arises mainly from the Co atoms.
