International Journal of Languages' Education and Teaching
In this study, Tahsin Yücel's story titled Komşular in the story book published under the same name was examined within the framework of the theme of women. How women and their representation are reflected in the story has been tried to be explained by images that are clearly and/or implicitly embedded in the narrative. Although there is only one female protagonist in the story called Komşular, the development of the narrative is entirely made sense by her existence, role and social perception
... f gender. The story tells the transformation of a fight into a series of events interpreted with a stream of consciousness that the main character Colonel Atmaca witnessed on the balcony of a family living downstairs from the balcony of the house he rented in a coastal village where he came to spend his holiday. At first, the fight of the neighboring couple whom he witnessed unintentionally turns into a habit, obsession in which Colonel Atmaca is passionate or captive. In this testimony, the fact that Colonel Atmaca is on the woman's side is also very important in terms of revealing his personal references such as social, religious, philosophical and personal dimensions of female identity. In this respect, in this study, it is tried to determine how women, women's identity and their perception are represented in the story within the framework of these criteria. With this determination, it is concluded that the most important driver of the story's theme and message is the woman. On the cognitive level, Colonel Atmaca, who positions himself completely according to the heroine and finds himself in a fight, evaluates the events from her point of view. Colonel Atmaca, who is on her side, questions life and facts through a fight and confronts them. The reasons and consequences of the fight that the he was involved in because of this woman lose their meaning completely and he left to return to his former life with the disappointment he suffered because of the same woman.
