ABSTRACT Population aging is a worldwide reality and, especially in Brazil, this transition is occurring in an accelerated way, which demands a public health system capable of reaching the needs of the population, since there is an increase in the chronic-degenerative diseases that mainly affect this population the elderly. Among the diseases that have an increased occurrence with aging are falls, which are both a cause and a consequence of the loss of functionality in the elderly. It is necessary that the nurse, especially primary care, be able to identify the risk factors for falls in the elderly and to develop strategies for prevention. The objective of this study is to describe the role of nurses in the prevention of falls in the elderly population in the primary care setting. We used seven articles found in the virtual bases and three selected through free search on the internet in a specific portal of scientific works. Nursing care developed in primary care for the prevention of falls in the elderly should go beyond the activities of health education to raise awareness of the patient, their relatives and / or caregivers as to the risk factors. The nurse is a determining figure in facing the problem of falls in the elderly population, and their participation in the elaboration of public policies aimed at reducing this problem, such as improvement and adaptation of the infrastructure, in public and private places, governmental incentive to the programs that promote the socialization of the elderly, healthy eating and physical exercise.
