This paper presents an experiment used in an introductory class in materials for engineering technology. Students review product literature from several types of commercially available fishing line, determine what mechanical properties are of interest, and then make appropriate measurements. The experiment allows students to compare the mechanical properties of different polymer materials, and to compare measured results with advertised specifications.
