KINETICS OF THE REACTION BETWEEN FORMALDEHYDE AND AMMONIA
1957
Zenodo
The formation of hexamethylenetetramine has been studied in aqueous solutions at two different temperatures by mixing stoichiometric proportions of H.CHO and NH4OH, and determining the rate of disappearance of the aldehyde. The reaction has been found to be a third-order one. The presence of au intermediate complex has been detected, which on hydrolysing with dilute acetic acid yields H.CHO and NH4OH in eguimolecular proportions. A three-step mechanism has been proposed involving a Mannich type of reaction.
