This study was prompted by the identified need for an evidence-based treatment program for substance-involved NCAA Division I student-athletes. A needs assessment was conducted, surveying the treating clinicians in order to develop prevention and intervention recommendations to address the unique needs of the student-athlete population, the athletic environment, the athletic and university systems, and the organizational needs of the treating clinicians. Results described recommendations for individual treatment and systemic interventions. Results also identified the need for a continuum of prevention and intervention services. Participants also discussed the need to examine interdepartmental dynamics that could influence the success of a comprehensive program. The results of this study recommend a comprehensive program with a range of services to address the continuum of student-athletes' substance use behaviors.
