Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a key player in the extrinsic pathway of apoptosis; it selectively damages cancer cells through binding to its surface receptors, however, cancers can escape this pathway through expression of dysfunctional decoy receptors.
