Musical Nationalism for the 21st Century: From Andrade's Archive to A Barca's Repertoire

This paper compares the first album of the São Paulo based group A Barca to Mário de Andrade's musical nationalism in the early 20th century, which inspired the contemporary group. Rather than precisely replicating the original sources, A Barca creates a hybrid cultural form that blurs the constructed distinctions between popular and erudite, traditional and modern.
