Technological progress is the main driver of many applications for digitization and networking in many domains of private and business life. Especially in the context of a progressively digitized production Cyber-physical Systems (CPS) are defined as one of the primary enablers and cornerstones for the most efficient and flexible production. Cyber-physical Production Systems (CPPS) are CPS used in a production context. CPPS can range from a simple (wirelessly) networked sensor in the form of an

Due to their nature, CPPS can form a system of systems from a machine to a production line to a complete factory. This complexity is hard to handle for operators on the shop floor. This paper presents a concept for a middleware-based approach on how to handle the modeling of CPPS during the operational life cycle phase for a functional extension.
