The article describes labour activity as a factor of economic and emotional well-being of the population. It gives some methods of assessing the well-being of the population and covers the issue of employment at the state level as well as at the individual level. The author introduces classification of the population according to the relationship to work and analyses job satisfaction of the Russian population. Finally, the methods of increasing the employment productivity and professional selfdetermination of the population are suggested.
