Wireless sensor communication has been an accelerating trend for industrial automation in controlling and monitoring processes. A variety of technologies has also emerged in fulfilling the industrial requirements. The ISA100.11a is an industrial technology to provide a vast range of industrial applications. We present a technical overview of ISA100.11a with its advantages and disadvantages as guidance to developers and researchers. This study finally discusses the challenges posed by the scheduling techniques specifically in ISA100.11a.
