Indian Maritime Doctrine-2004, revised in 2009, was aimed at transforming it from a 'brown water' coastal defense force to a formidable 'blue water' navy. Technically, Indian Navy would have the capability to operate 200 nautical miles from its seashore into the deep sea for extended durations, whereas politically, it would be a long-range extension of the state's presence as a power projection.
