Correlation of Densification Kinetics of Polycrystalline Ceramics with Colloid/Interface Variables

Densification kinetics of Al2O3 and Y-doped ZrO2 cer amics was quantitatively correlated with the kinetic stability of the corresponding colloidal suspensions. Analysis of the densification data showed that increas ing the kinetic stability of suspension significantly en hances the rate constant of sintering in the linear den sification regime. A concept of critical stability of col loidal suspension was applied to the interpretation of densification kinetics of Al2O3 and Y-doped ZrO2, and this
more » ... demonstrated a direct linear correlation of the stability ratio (W) with the reciprocal densification rate constant with a transition behavior at the critical stability point. alumina prepared at (a) pH 3, (b) pH 5, (c) pH 7 and (d) pH 9. The compacts were sintered at 1480•Ž for 4h.
