Previous studies identified a small fraction of putatively sumoylated topoisomerase I (TOP1) under basal conditions (ϳ1%), and anticancer camptothecins that trap the TOP1-DNA covalent intermediate markedly increase the sumoylation of TOP1 (<10%).
