This study aimed to investigate the psychosocial factors related to domestic violence by women against their children. A household survey random sampling was conducted in two neighborhoods with different socioeconomic characteristics, of Juiz de Fora, Brazil. We interviewed 446 adult women who had children aged up to 18 years. We used a sociodemographic questionnaire, plus four standardized instruments: CTSPC (Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scales), CTS2 (Revised Conflict Tactics Scales), AUDIT

Data were processed and analyzed using STATA statistical software, taking into account the characteristics of the study sample design. Logistic regressions were performed to determine the association between psychosocial variables and occurrence of domestic violence against children. Women with higher levels of education were less likely to practice psychological aggression (OR: 0:47 CI: 0.24-0.91) and corporal punishment (OR: 0:32 CI: 0.16-0.64) against the children. Age was associated with the practice of corporal punishment (OR: 0.94 CI: 0.91-0.97), whilst residing in the higher socioeconomic neighborhood decreased the chances of practicing psychological aggression (OR: 0:45 CI: 0.27-0.75). Regarding the practice of child maltreatment, the risk factors were depression (OR: 3.75 CI: 1:51-9:31) and harmful alcohol use (OR: 4.73 CI: 1:17-19:10) by women. The results point to the relevance of strategies to prevent domestic violence and effective interventions focusing on women's mental health. Alcohol and Alcoholism, 2015, 50(S1) i1-i67 Abstracts
