We propose a new apprQximation method , which caIculates shearing forces of a Iiquid meniscus bridge between parallel plates with srrlall clearance , and discuss the effect Qf three ge 〔 }metrical parameters , the volume of the bridge , clearance of the planes , and contact angle , on the shearing forces 、 The metbod introduces the nonaxisymmetry of the ! iquid meniscus bridge by permitting the change of the contac し angle on the triple lines , and thereby the calculated shearing forces

Experiments were carried out to rneasure the spring constants of the meniscus bridge in the shearing direction , and showed that the experimental results agreed with the calculated ones qualitatively . Moreover , the shape of the riquid meniscus bridge under shear is consistent with 亡 he assumptions of the approximation method . Shearing forces increased wi 亡 h both the volume of the liquid meniscus bridge and the contact angle or w 量 th the decrease of clearance .
