A VLA Search for CO and HCN Emission from z=4 Quasars

A search for CO(l -0) line emission from nine quasars and one radio galaxy at z^4 has been conducted using the VLA. Also, one quasar at z = 4.7 was searched for HCN( 1-0) emission. Velocity coverage was >2000 km s" 1 in all cases. No detections were obtained, with upper limits on peak line flux densities in the 2-5 mJy/beam range. Corresponding upper limits on molecular gas masses are typically several X 10 11 Mq , assuming the standard Galactic CO to H 2 conversion factor and a CO linewidth of 300 km s" 1 .
