Out of 316 cases of patients with primary carcinoma of the colon who underwent surgical operation at Okura National Hospital during the past 14 years, 51 cases (16.1%) were diagnosed as ileus at an initial examination, and 6 cases were camplicated by perforation. In 259 cases of nonobstructive type, initial Symptoms were some hemorrhage or other in the majority (53.7%) of the cases, which was followed by abdominal pain and abnormal evacuation. more » ... .7%) of the total 51 cases of ileus, and the common symptoms were abdominal pain or fullness. Male patients are more than twice as many as female patients, which were different from those reported in Western countries. An yearly occurrence rate, when the 14 years was divided into 2 parts, i. e., the first half and the latter half, decreased remarkably during the latter half of the period.
