The present status of the chiral approach t o t h e NNinteraction as proposed by W einberg is discussed. The important role of correlation eects and explicit vector meson (, !) exchange in the dynamics of baryon-baryon interactions is demonstrated. As an example, the inclusion of the exchange of a correlated pair of and meson between two n ucleons appears to be mandatory in order to resolve a longstanding puzzle concerning the formfactor at the pion-nucleon-nucleon vertex.
