M-Governance in India: Issues and Initiatives

M-Governance can be defined as a strategy and its implementation to leverage available wireless and new media technology platforms, mobile phone devices and applications for delivery of public information and services to citizens and businesses. M-Governance is not a replacement of E-Governance; rather it complements it. It can help make public information and government services available anytime and anywhere by bringing personalized, localized and context aware services close to citizens and
more » ... fficials. M-Governance ensures that electronic services are available to people via mobile technologies using devices such as mobile phones. These services bypass the need for traditional physical networks for communications and collaboration. Mobile services are also cheaper as well as accessible in most of the rural areas in India. Increasing the mobile phone accessibility, adaptability and with the millions of subscription base, government is promoting and using the mobile phone in delivery of M-Governance services. In the last few years, government has seen mobile phones can empower citizens and affect the way citizens interact with each other and with society at large. Mobile phones are also considered to be an effective tool in strengthening democracy through better citizen-government interaction, thus influencing the political decision making process and making government accountable for its activities. The main objective of the paper is to know the Government Initiatives for M-Governance, its status apart from Challenges and ways to overcome them.
