The article is devoted to the analysis of the character system in A.P. Chekhov's story "Ward No. 6". Both the main characters and the secondary ones (not studied sufficiently in critical works) are considered in the article as personifications of the seven deadly sins. The sick (the ward inhabitants) and the healthy (citizens) are compared and contrasted on the basis of their sins' quality. The sins of the mentally ill patients, conditioned by their illness (sloth of the paralyzed) or implicit

Dr. Ragin, who personifies a complex of sins, is included in both groups of characters. His evolution is linked to the reconsideration of the idea of what true sins are. The new approach to the character system makes the interpretation of the story more accurate and nuanced.
